Audra State Park

Audra State Park protects about 355 acres along the Middle Fork River in the rolling hill country of Barbour County. It is deliberately unassuming — there is no lodge, no golf course, and no crowds. What you get instead is a cool river, deep hemlock shade, and some of the most relaxing swimming holes in north-central West Virginia.

The park's defining features are the sandstone overhangs along the river, the largest of which is known as Alum Cave. Although it is not a true cave, the recessed rock shelter is dramatic and has drawn visitors for generations.

Audra is a favorite of local families on hot summer weekends and a quiet retreat for campers who want to slow down.

Audra's trail network is short and sweet — ideal for a morning walk.

Alum Cave Trail — a moderate loop leading to the massive rock overhang, with river views and hemlock forest.

River Trail — an easy riverside path connecting the swimming and picnic areas.

Nature Trail — a short interpretive walk introducing the plants and geology of the Middle Fork valley.

Audra has no cabins or lodge — the only overnight option is the riverside campground, with roughly 75 tent and RV sites, some with electric hookups, plus restrooms and hot showers. Because the campground is small, summer weekends fill quickly.

Visitors wanting more amenities often stay in nearby Elkins or at Tygart Lake and visit Audra as a day trip.

The Middle Fork River is stocked with trout and also holds smallmouth bass and other warm-water fish in summer. A valid West Virginia fishing license is required.

Swimming here is a river experience, not a pool: the water is clear, shallow, and cool, with natural pools and gravel bars. There are no lifeguards, so supervise children closely and be mindful of changing currents after rain. Tubing is a popular local summer tradition.
