Overview

North Bend State Park sits where the North Fork of the Hughes River was dammed to create North Bend Lake, a 300-plus-acre sheet of water tucked among the hills of Ritchie County. The park is known for its relaxed pace and its direct connection to the North Bend Rail Trail.

That trail — a 72-mile converted railroad corridor stretching from Parkersburg toward Clarksburg — runs right through the park, passing through tunnels and over old trestles. It is one of the premier long-distance cycling and walking routes in West Virginia.

The park pairs an accessible lodge with cabins and camping, making it a comfortable base for exploring north-central West Virginia's small towns and outdoor country.

Things to Do

  • •Ride or walk a section of the North Bend Rail Trail.
  • •Boat, kayak, or fish on North Bend Lake.
  • •Swim in the lodge's indoor pool.
  • •Hike the park's forest and lakeside trails.
  • •Watch for deer, herons, and waterfowl around the lake.
  • •Dine at the lodge restaurant overlooking the water.

Hiking Trails

North Bend Rail Trail — technically a multi-use rail trail rather than a hiking path, but the park's marquee route, with 72 miles of gentle grade to explore in either direction.

Lakeview Trail — an easy path along the shoreline, good for families and birders.

Nature Trail — a short interpretive loop near the lodge introducing the local forest.

Ridge Trails — a handful of wooded routes climbing away from the lake for quiet forest walking.

Lodge, Cabins & Camping

North Bend Lodge is the park's anchor, with around 47 rooms, a restaurant, conference space, and an indoor pool. Rooms overlook the lake and surrounding hills, and the lodge is open year-round.

A small number of cabins provide extra space and privacy for families or groups. The campground has dozens of sites for tents and RVs, including electric hookups, with modern bathhouses and a camp store. A boat launch and docks sit near the campground for easy lake access.

Fishing, Boating & Swimming

North Bend Lake is a solid warm-water fishery with largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill; it is also stocked with trout in cooler months. Boats with electric motors, canoes, and kayaks are welcome, and there are launch ramps and docks. A valid West Virginia fishing license is required.

Swimming is available in the lodge's indoor pool. There is no outdoor beach, but the calm lake is popular with paddlers and anglers.

Best Time to Visit & Directions

Spring through fall is the main season for the rail trail, lake, and lodge. October is especially beautiful for cycling the corridor. Winter is quiet, with the lodge open and the lake often reflecting bare hills.

From Harrisville, take WV-31 west toward Cairo, then follow signs to the park entrance. The park is about 35 minutes from Parkersburg and roughly 1 hour 45 minutes from Charleston.
