Overview

Twin Falls Resort State Park occupies a rolling, heavily forested ridge in the coal country of southern West Virginia. The park takes its name from two waterfalls — Marsh Fork Falls and Black Fork Falls — that tumble through a hemlock ravine near the lodge and golf course.

Developed in the late 1960s and 1970s, Twin Falls was designed from the start as a resort, combining outdoor recreation with lodging, dining, and a championship golf course. It is one of the few West Virginia state parks with an indoor swimming pool and a full conference center.

The park also preserves a slice of Appalachian heritage at the Pioneer Farm, a restored late-19th-century homestead where visitors can see period buildings, gardens, and farm animals.

Things to Do

  • •Hike to the twin waterfalls in the ravine below the lodge.
  • •Play 18 holes on the park's mountain golf course.
  • •Tour the Pioneer Farm and its historic buildings.
  • •Swim in the indoor pool at the lodge.
  • •Fish the park pond and nearby streams.
  • •Walk the interpretive Mine Trail for a look at the region's coal history.

Hiking Trails

Falls Trail — a short, steep descent from the lodge area to the two waterfalls; the most popular walk in the park.

Mine Trail — an interpretive loop with markers explaining the area's coal-mining past, including old mine openings.

Cliffside Trail — a wooded walk along a ridge with filtered views.

Lake Trail — an easy loop around the park's small pond and picnic area.

Tunnel Trail — a moderate path passing a historic railroad tunnel cut through the hillside.

Lodge, Cabins & Camping

The Twin Falls Lodge has around 47 rooms, a restaurant, lounge, conference facilities, and an indoor pool — a rare amenity in the state park system. It is the easiest base for golf and waterfall hikes.

Fourteen cabins sit in the woods near the lodge, with kitchens and fireplaces. The campground offers roughly 50 sites for tents and RVs with electric and water hookups, plus a bathhouse and dump station.

Fishing & Swimming

The park pond is stocked and open to catch-and-release or seasonal harvest fishing; nearby streams in the Guyandotte watershed hold native and stocked trout. A valid West Virginia fishing license is required.

Swimming is available year-round in the lodge's indoor pool, a hit with families on rainy days. There is no outdoor swimming area in the park.

Best Time to Visit & Directions

The waterfalls run strongest in spring and after summer storms; late summer can slow them to a trickle. Golf and the pool are best May through October. Fall color peaks in mid-October.

From Beckley, take WV-16 south through Pineville toward Mullens, then follow signs to the park. The drive is roughly 50 minutes. From Charleston, allow about 1 hour 45 minutes.
