Overview

Stonewall Resort State Park wraps around Stonewall Jackson Lake, a 2,600-acre reservoir created on the West Fork River in the late 1980s. The park is unusual in the West Virginia system for its polish: a full-service Adirondack-style lodge, upscale cottages, fine dining, a spa, and a top-ranked golf course.

The lake is the park's playground. Its long, wooded shoreline is ideal for pontooning, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing, with a full-service marina and multiple coves to explore.

The park sits minutes from Weston, home of the historic Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum and the Museum of American Glass, and about 30 minutes from the cultural attractions of Clarksburg and Bridgeport.

Things to Do

  • •Play 18 holes on the Arnold Palmer signature golf course.
  • •Rent a pontoon, kayak, or paddleboard at the marina.
  • •Fish the lake's coves for bass, crappie, and catfish.
  • •Swim at the outdoor pool and lake beach area.
  • •Unwind at the resort spa.
  • •Walk the shoreline and forest trails around the lake.

Hiking Trails

Stonewall Jackson Lake Trail — the park's long shoreline route, offering water views and forest walking, often split into shorter sections.

Nature Trail — a gentle interpretive loop near the lodge and cottages.

Ridge and Hollow Trails — short routes climbing away from the lake through mixed hardwood forest.

Trails are gentle by West Virginia standards, making Stonewall a good choice for casual walkers, runners, and families.

Lodge, Cottages & Lodging

The Stonewall Resort lodge is a large, cedar-and-stone Adirondack-style building with close to 200 rooms and suites, many with lake balconies. It holds two restaurants, a lounge, a spa, indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center, and extensive conference facilities.

Scattered along the shoreline and in the woods are cottages with multiple bedrooms, kitchens, and porches — ideal for families and groups who want more space. There is no traditional state-park campground inside Stonewall Resort, but the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates the nearby Briar Point Campground on the lake for tent and RV campers.

Fishing, Boating & Swimming

Stonewall Jackson Lake is a strong fishery for largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish, with musky present as well. The marina offers boat rentals, fuel, and slips. A valid West Virginia fishing license is required.

Boating is central to the Stonewall experience — pontoons, runabouts, kayaks, and paddleboards all share the water. Swimming is available at the resort's outdoor pool; the lake itself is primarily a boating and fishing lake.

Best Time to Visit & Directions

Late spring through early fall is when the lake, golf course, and pools are in full swing. Autumn is gorgeous for golf and shoreline walks. Winter brings a quieter resort with holiday events and cozy lodge weekends.

From Weston, take US-19 south for about 5 miles and follow signs to Stonewall Resort. The park is roughly 30 minutes from Clarksburg and about 2 hours from Charleston.
