High Country, Four Seasons
Tucker County sits in the Potomac Highlands at the crest of the Allegheny Mountains, where elevation and weather combine to create a pocket of true alpine country in the Mid-Atlantic. It is the kind of place where you can ski in the morning and hike through a spruce bog in the afternoon.
The county has earned its reputation as West Virginia's outdoor playground. It holds Blackwater Falls State Park, Canaan Valley Resort, Timberline Mountain, a big slice of Dolly Sods Wilderness and endless acres of the Monongahela National Forest.
It also has a surprisingly vibrant cultural scene, thanks to the towns of Davis and Thomas, whose galleries, breweries, music venues and coffee shops attract artists and adventurers alike.

Signature Sight
Blackwater Falls State Park
Blackwater Falls is the most famous waterfall in West Virginia, a 57-foot curtain of amber-tinted water dropping into a deep, hemlock-lined gorge. The color comes from tannins leached from the spruce and hemlock needles upstream.
The park makes it easy to visit. Paved paths and a long staircase lead to several viewing platforms at the brink and base of the falls, and the Lindy Point overlook delivers one of the finest canyon views in the state.
Cabins, a lodge and campgrounds sit within the park, making it a comfortable base for a multi-day Tucker County trip.
Davis & Thomas
Davis is the county's outdoor hub, sitting at the foot of Canaan Valley and Blackwater Falls. It is a compact grid of gear shops, restaurants and a famous local brewery that has become a gathering place for skiers, bikers and hikers year-round.
Down the road, Thomas has reinvented itself as a small arts town. Galleries, a restored historic theater, a coffee roaster and live-music spots fill its old brick storefronts, giving the county a cultural heart to match its scenery.
Together the two towns make an ideal base: stay between them, and virtually every major attraction in the county is within a 20-minute drive.

Winter Playground
Canaan Valley & Timberline
Canaan Valley is a broad, bowl-shaped high valley famous for its wetlands and heavy snowfall. Canaan Valley Resort and Timberline Mountain both operate full-service ski areas here, with terrain for beginners through experts, plus tubing and Nordic trails.
The valley is not just for winter. The Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge protects rare high-elevation wetlands where you can hike, birdwatch and spot beaver, while golf, mountain biking and wildflower walks fill the warmer months.
The surrounding Monongahela National Forest adds even more trails and backcountry access, making the valley a true four-season destination.
Dolly Sods Wilderness
Dolly Sods spills across the Tucker County line into a strange, beautiful plateau of red spruce, windswept heath and pale boulders. It is one of the premier backpacking areas in the eastern United States and a favorite subject for photographers at Bear Rocks.
The trails are rugged and often wet, and the weather changes fast, but the reward is a landscape that feels like northern Canada dropped into Appalachia. Blueberry picking in late summer is a beloved local tradition.
Day visitors can enjoy the easy walk to Bear Rocks, while backpackers can string together loops of 6 to 20 miles through the wilderness.
Where to Eat & Stay
Tucker County punches far above its weight when it comes to food and drink. Davis and Thomas both offer farm-to-table restaurants, wood-fired pizza, hearty breakfasts and a pair of well-loved craft breweries, along with a coffee roaster that supplies the whole valley.
Lodging ranges from the state park lodge and cabins at Blackwater Falls and Canaan Valley to slope-side condos at the ski resorts, plus a growing collection of inns, cabins and vacation rentals in and around the two towns.
Spring, summer and fall weekends book up quickly, and ski season is busiest of all, so reserve early if you have your heart set on a specific spot.
Getting to Tucker County
Tucker County is reached via US Route 48 and WV Routes 32 and 219, roughly three hours from Washington, D.C. and Pittsburgh. The mountain roads are scenic but slow, especially in winter.
