New River Gorge Overlooks

The New River Gorge is the state's premier overlook country. Grandview offers the iconic Main Overlook, a horseshoe bend view of the river, plus the Turkey Spur and North Overlook with their stone steps. Canyon Rim Visitor Center on the north side is the classic spot to see the New River Gorge Bridge, with boardwalks leading to several platforms and a lower deck for the full span. Hawks Nest State Park on the rim of the Gauley canyon has a lodge, aerial tram, and the famous Hawks Nest overlook above the river. Lindy Point at Blackwater Falls is a short, flat walk to one of the most photographed views in the state, and the trails around Long Point and Endless Wall add more drama.

High Country: Bear Rocks & Dolly Sods

Bear Rocks Preserve on the eastern edge of Dolly Sods may be the most otherworldly view in West Virginia — a field of wind-carved sandstone outcrops looking east over the Allegheny Front toward Virginia. It is a short but rocky walk from the parking area, and sunrise there is unforgettable. The Dolly Sods plateau itself offers endless open views, and the Highland Scenic Highway (Route 150) has a series of pull-offs with sweeping mountain panoramas near Cranberry Glades and the Williams River. Do not miss the High Rocks and Tea Creek overlooks on the scenic byway.

Fire Towers & Southern Views

A handful of historic fire towers survive and offer 360-degree views. The High Knob Tower on Spruce Mountain near the Virginia line is a short climb with one of the widest panoramas in the region. The Seneca State Forest fire tower near Marlinton, the Olson Observation Tower at Seneca Rocks, and the Bickle Knob tower near Elkins all reward a little effort with big views of the Monongahela highlands. In the south, the East River Mountain Overlook on I-77 near Bluefield provides a dramatic valley vista, and the Pinnacle Rock area at Panther State Forest offers a rugged southern perspective.

Best Times & Photography Tips

Fall color typically peaks in the high Alleghenies in late September and reaches the New River Gorge by mid-October, so plan a ridge-to-gorge route if you want to chase the best foliage. Sunrise and the hour before sunset give the softest, most dramatic light; midday haze can flatten distant views. Bring a polarizing filter to cut glare on rivers and foliage, and a wide-angle lens for the gorge panoramas. Spring mornings often bring valley fog that makes even familiar overlooks look new. Pack layers — the high-country overlooks can be 15 degrees cooler and much windier than the valleys below.

Viewpoint Safety & Etiquette

Stay Behind Barriers

Cliff edges crumble and slickrock is deceptive. Keep children and pets back from the rim, and never climb over a fence for a photo.

Watch the Weather

Lightning loves ridgelines and exposed rock. Leave the overlook before a storm arrives and avoid open areas during thunder.

Share the View

These spots get crowded at sunset and in fall. Park legally, keep visits brief at busy platforms, and carry out everything you bring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which overlook is easiest to reach?

Canyon Rim Visitor Center and Grandview's Main Overlook are both essentially drive-up, with only short walks to the platforms. Lindy Point is a flat 0.5-mile walk.

When is the best time for fall color at the overlooks?

High-elevation views like Bear Rocks and Spruce Knob peak in late September to early October, while the New River Gorge usually peaks in mid-October.

Are the overlooks accessible to people with limited mobility?

Several are. Canyon Rim Visitor Center has accessible boardwalks, and Grandview, Hawks Nest, and Lindy Point have relatively easy paths. Bear Rocks and fire towers involve uneven footing.

Can I fly a drone at a West Virginia overlook?

Drones are prohibited in national park and many state park areas, including the New River Gorge. Always check local rules before flying, and never launch near wildlife or crowds.
