New River Bridge Walk: A Unique Adventure Above the New River Gorge
Few experiences in West Virginia combine spectacular scenery, history, engineering and adventure quite like the New River Bridge Walk. Located at the famous New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville, West Virginia, this guided experience allows visitors to walk across a narrow catwalk underneath one of America's most recognizable bridges.
Instead of simply viewing the bridge from an overlook, the New River Bridge Walk puts you underneath the highway and high above the New River. Participants are secured to a continuous safety system while walking the entire 3,030-foot length of the bridge.
For anyone visiting New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, the New River Bridge Walk offers a perspective of the gorge that is difficult to experience anywhere else.

What Is the New River Bridge Walk?
The New River Bridge Walk is a guided tour along the inspection catwalk located approximately 25 feet underneath the roadway of the New River Gorge Bridge. The catwalk stretches across the entire 3,030-foot length of the bridge and sits approximately 851 feet above the New River.
The experience is operated by Bridge Walk LLC and has been offering guided catwalk tours since 2010. Unlike Bridge Day, when pedestrians are permitted onto the roadway itself, the regular New River Bridge Walk takes place underneath the bridge. Traffic continues traveling along U.S. Route 19 overhead while participants walk underneath it.
The catwalk is approximately 24 inches wide and includes a railing. Every participant wears a harness that connects to a continuous safety cable running along the bridge. Guests remain securely connected throughout the crossing.

What to Expect During the New River Bridge Walk
Visitors should plan approximately two hours or more for the entire New River Bridge Walk experience. The adventure begins at Bridge Walk headquarters in Lansing, West Virginia. After checking in, participants meet their guide and receive instructions about the tour and safety equipment.
A shuttle transports the group toward the bridge access area. Participants then make a short walk to the entrance of the catwalk, where they begin their journey underneath the New River Gorge Bridge. The pace is intentionally relaxed. This isn't a race across the bridge. Guides stop throughout the tour so visitors can admire the scenery, take photographs, ask questions and learn about the history and engineering of the bridge.
After crossing the bridge, participants take a short trail back toward road level before being shuttled back to Bridge Walk headquarters.

How High Is the New River Bridge Walk?
Height is one of the biggest reasons people remember the New River Bridge Walk. The New River Gorge Bridge rises approximately 876 feet from the bridge deck to the river below. Because the catwalk is positioned underneath the roadway, participants on the Bridge Walk are approximately 851 feet above the New River.
From this height, visitors receive panoramic views of the New River Gorge, surrounding Appalachian Mountains, the New River and the massive steel structure supporting the bridge.
Fall can be particularly impressive as the mountains surrounding the gorge turn shades of red, orange and yellow. Summer provides lush green scenery, while winter opens additional views through the leafless forest. Bridge Walk operates throughout the year, making the experience possible during all four seasons.

How Much Does the New River Bridge Walk Cost?
As of October 2026, the standard New River Bridge Walk is advertised as starting at $79 per person. The regular tour lasts approximately two hours or longer and includes the guided crossing, safety equipment and shuttle transportation associated with the experience. Prices can change, so visitors should confirm current pricing when making reservations.
There is also a special Bridge Day Bridge Walk. For the October 17, 2026 Bridge Day event, the special catwalk experience is listed at $125 per person. This tour provides a particularly unusual perspective because participants can watch BASE jumpers and other Bridge Day activities from beneath the bridge.
Reservations are recommended because tour groups are limited in size and popular dates can fill.

Who Can Participate?
The New River Bridge Walk is designed to accommodate a wide range of visitors, but there are participation requirements. Children must be at least 8 years old and 48 inches tall. Participants must also be able to properly fit into the required safety harness.
Bridge Walk advises visitors that the experience involves moderate physical activity, including inclined trails, grated surfaces, narrow areas and approximately 1¼ miles of total walking. People concerned about physical limitations should contact Bridge Walk before making reservations.
The walk can look intimidating in photographs, particularly for someone uncomfortable with heights. However, visitors are attached to the continuous safety cable throughout the catwalk portion of the experience.

What Should You Wear?
Comfortable walking shoes are important for the New River Bridge Walk. Closed-toe shoes are recommended, although certain secure sandals with heel straps may be permitted.
Visitors should also remember that conditions underneath the bridge can be considerably cooler than conditions elsewhere in the park. Bridge Walk recommends preparing for temperatures approximately 10 to 15 degrees cooler on the catwalk.
Tours normally operate rain or shine. Because the roadway is directly above the catwalk, much of the walk is sheltered by the bridge itself. A rain jacket can still be useful for the portions of the experience leading to and from the bridge.

Can You Take Pictures?
Photography is one of the highlights of the New River Bridge Walk, and cameras and cell phones are permitted with an important restriction: equipment must be securely attached.
Loose objects aren't allowed because dropping something from hundreds of feet above the gorge would create an obvious safety hazard. Visitors can purchase a phone lanyard from Bridge Walk if they don't already have a secure way to attach their phone.
Bags, backpacks, purses, food, drinks and other loose items aren't permitted on the catwalk.

The History Behind the New River Gorge Bridge
The bridge itself makes the New River Bridge Walk especially interesting for anyone fascinated by engineering. Construction of the New River Gorge Bridge began in 1974, and the bridge opened on October 22, 1977. Construction took approximately three years and cost about $37 million.
The bridge stretches 3,030 feet across the gorge and contains a 1,700-foot main arch span. Approximately 22,000 tons of COR-TEN steel were used in its construction. Before the bridge opened, traveling from one side of the gorge to the other required a winding drive down into the gorge and back up the opposite side. The bridge dramatically shortened that trip.
Today, the bridge is one of West Virginia's most recognizable landmarks and even appears on the West Virginia state quarter. Read more on our New River Gorge Bridge guide.
